A deadly accident is followed by a major pile-up that shut down an interstate for several hours Sunday.
The series of accidents happened on Interstate 77 on Fancy Gap Mountain in Carroll County. State Police say the first happened around six thirty this morning when a man was killed by a hit and run driver as he walked on the side of the interstate. They're not releasing the victim's name yet but say he had an accident and was walking to get help.
As troopers worked that, a tractor trailer and several cars got into an accident. They say the fog on Fancy Gap was thick but troopers say it did not slow drivers down. Some, they say, drove fifty to fifty-five miles an hour, despite the fact they you could only see fifty feet ahead.
The tractor trailer accident led to several chain reaction pile-ups. There were between fifteen and twenty accidents in all. There were about fifty vehicles involved. State police say more than two dozen people were taken to the hospital.
